Last week I traveled to Tennessee with a friend and “belt looper,” Jerry Pence, to evaluate a vertical SaaS company. I enjoy spending time with Jerry. He is ridiculously sharp and intuitive in analyzing deals. Business is much more fun when you do it with other people.
I like this opportunity we are looking at as it checks several boxes in DWP Capital’s investment thesis. Specifically, this company sells into a specific vertical but can expand to other markets in a high case scenario. I’d much rather deal with execution risk than product or market risk. We will run through the entire “move forward analysis” this week based on team and product.
Some interesting reads I had over the last couple of days
Apple Hiring Cloud Architects– Protocol is reporting that Apple is on a hiring spree for cloud architecture leadership and engineers. This article is fascinating because I have a significant position in Apple, and I am always eager to see new products. The company has always prided itself on being focused on a small number of products, but I would love to see more R&D.
Returns on 100M Seed Valuation– Fred Wilson from USV does the math on the ridiculous valuations for seed-stage companies. In short- it doesn’t pencil.
