Mickey’s Margins: A Dad’s Diary on Dollars and Disney

My wife delights in subjecting me to the joys of accompanying our children to theme parks. During the recent Christmas break, we embarked on a memorable three-day adventure at Disneyland, where we had the pleasure of staying at the Grand Hotel. I do not need to look far to find find other parents that can commiserate with me on the perils of Disneyland.

Despite the cost, crowds, and lines there is a lot to be admired in Disneyland. It is an operational masterpiece. Between the two parks in Anaheim the park averages 70,000 guests per day. In a recent article I read that it costs the parks $5.5M per day to operate. The amount of workers in the mark per day are 3,000-5,500 depending on the season There are 200 people alone working in landscaping the 500+ Acre park.

The most impressive piece of operations is the training. Not once could I reference an experience that involved bad customer service. Everyone seemed to be on their game and wanted to be there.

Disney has been getting a lot of flack in the news lately because of their movie releases and culture war stuff. I personally think they need to make MORE Marvel movies. Their IP library is incredible and timeless. Overall- despite me never wanting to go there again I was a very happy customer!
