One word on my Dallas trip. Wow. I have never seen such a social presence of money in one area. This area is called Old Parkland. It was formed by the Crow family, one of the biggest real-estate holders in the US. The campus was a former hospital, but it honestly looks like a Jeffersonian University or perhaps Hogwarts school of magic. Now it’s inhabited by the who’s who of the Dallas financial markets. The only people allowed to lease space are fund managers and family offices. Here are some pictures of the campus.
Although the capital scene is pretty well defined, the startup scene isn’t. That is at least what I heard from the local connectors that live in that ecosystem. Dallas has all the major pillars of a great startup ecosystem, including capital, big corporations, and universities. However, there still is much to be desired from what I have heard from the locals. Nevertheless, I still think that it can be an excellent ground for sourcing deals as founders should be more focused on company building rather than fundraising and networking.
Today is a busy day of meetings in Phoenix. Tonight I will be flying to San Diego for a busy day on Tuesday, including golf, connecting great founders over lunch, and board meetings. Onward.
