A couple of weeks ago, I decided to start a podcast. The reason is very selfish and can be broken into three categories.
Reach
Structure
Intelligence
Reach: As a solo emerging GP, I find that my entry point into deals results from opportunistic timing. Take in point my last deal – Datum Source. I called one of my sourcing contacts looking for deals. He just signed them on as a retainer for the legal council. Intro was given; we were a few calls and later under the term sheet. That is not a scalable way to get deals, and I believe that if I had some consistent messaging going out through social and direct channels, I would be more top of mind.
Structure: Anyone that knows me would tell you that I am scatterbrained. I’ve got a bad habit of filling up my calendar and just running through it mercilessly. This strategy gives me an A+ for execution but a B- for thoughtfulness. Having a structured routine of a podcast will force me to research and think critically on specific topics. The result will not just have a substantial quantity of conversations but will also elevate the quality.
Intelligence: The show is going to be in an interview format. I did this intentionally because I have been blessed to have some incredible people in my network who have great things to say. In addition, having a structure shows, I can methodically ask more profound questions that will ultimately make me a more intelligent investor.
All three of these reasons are for my benefit, not necessarily the listeners. I am hoping the listeners will like it, but ultimately, I will not continue to do something unless I see the value. As a founder once told me – “everything that I have been extremely successful in is something that I’ve clearly defined.” This article is me defining my intentions.
